Video clip: Irene thinks that part-time working might be possible if people are flexible and if necessary work on days when there is an important meeting or a key experiment to run.

But I am not generally struck with how effective a way of doing a clinical academic job that is, having off-time and on-time, even if it’s on a four to one basis. On the other hand there are other women I know who have a more 4:1 split, but are very flexible about how they work that part time. In other words they, they don’t have a day of the week which is so sacrosanct that they never will come in to do something. So if there are scientific experiments or very important scientific meetings or very important clinical task they won’t rigorously say, ‘I never come in on Mondays’, or whatever.
