Part-time and flexible working
Video clip: Helen felt she did a full-time job and often worked in the evenings, but she was only paid for four days a week. She liked this arrangement because she felt free to spend a day at home.
Have you ever worked part-time? You did say eighty per cent at one stage.
Yes, so I worked, I’m a bit hesitant to describe it as working part-time because, of course, I think inevitably what happens in those situations is you work full-time. You just cram it in to part-time hours. So I was paid to work eighty per cent of full time for about three years when my children, my eldest two were very young, which really was nice because it meant that I had a day at home with them, which was lovely and very precious and yes it meant I worked in the evening, the evenings of the other days but, but that was very special. When my eldest son started school I then decided actually I wanted to be at the school gate to pick him up. So then switched to working five days a week and the days gradually got longer again as the children have got older.
