I don’t think I have personal experience of not getting a particular post because I’m a woman. One thing I would comment on is the way that promotions work in Oxford, and many other universities, it’s basically a system of self-promotion. So if you want to go in for the recognition of distinction exercise for example you have to put yourself forward, now I don’t think that that’s very attractive for a lot of women. And I certainly find that very difficult myself. I’m not really a self-publicist. And I think that in some ways you need to be and I think that’s something that women find difficult, it comes much less naturally to them than it would to a man.
